There are places you visit for the attractions, and others you remember simply because of how they made you feel. Petit Métis, tucked along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Métis-sur-Mer, Québec, belongs firmly in the second category.
Surrounded by forest, sea and the quiet landscapes of the Gaspésie, Petit Métis offers a refreshingly simple kind of escape — one built around cozy eco-cabins, slow mornings, good coffee and plenty of time outdoors.
We spent a few days here discovering this peaceful corner of Québec, and quickly realized that Petit Métis isn’t just somewhere to sleep along a Gaspésie road trip. It’s part of the experience itself.
Staying at Petit Métis
Our coastal eco-cabin immediately embraced the idea of small-space living surrounded by nature.
Inside, the thoughtfully designed layout makes clever use of the available space, with a kitchen, dining area, living space and sleeping loft all incorporated into the cabin. Large windows keep the interior connected to the landscape outside and allow the surrounding greenery — and glimpses of the St. Lawrence — to become part of the décor.
But some of our favourite moments happened outside.
The private terrace became the perfect place to slow down, breathe in the salty air and simply enjoy being surrounded by trees. With an outdoor BBQ available, it’s easy to imagine spending an evening here preparing dinner before settling in for a quiet night.
Petit Métis also welcomed Paco, which made the experience even more special for us. Finding beautiful accommodations that allow you to bring your dog isn’t always easy, particularly when planning a road trip, so having a pet-friendly option along the Gaspésie coast is a definite bonus.
Coffee, Colour and the Petit Métis Café-Buvette
One of the things that gives Petit Métis its personality is its Café-Buvette.
The colourful, eclectic interior feels relaxed and distinctly different from a traditional hotel café. It’s the kind of place where you want to linger over your morning coffee rather than grab it and immediately leave.
And when you’re this close to the St. Lawrence, coffee tastes particularly good with a view.
Stopping here became part of the rhythm of our stay: wake up surrounded by nature, grab a coffee and start another slow day by the sea.
It’s a small detail, but it’s exactly these little experiences that make a stay memorable.
Discovering Métis-sur-Mer
Petit Métis is located in Métis-sur-Mer, a small seaside community on Québec’s Gaspé Peninsula.
Here, the St. Lawrence feels increasingly like the sea. The horizon stretches out in front of you, the air carries that unmistakable coastal feeling and the landscape encourages you to spend as much time outside as possible.
We loved simply walking toward the water and exploring the shoreline.
There doesn’t always need to be an itinerary.
Sometimes the best part of travelling through the Gaspésie is pulling over when something catches your eye, walking beside the water and allowing yourself to experience the landscape without rushing to the next destination.
Métis-sur-Mer is particularly well suited to that kind of travel.
A Different Kind of Québec Getaway
Petit Métis isn’t about oversized rooms, elaborate resorts or packed itineraries.
That’s precisely its charm.
It’s about waking up among the trees.
Coffee overlooking the St. Lawrence.
Walking toward the sea.
Coming back to your cozy eco-cabin after a day exploring the coast.
And realizing that you haven’t looked at the clock in hours.
For travellers who appreciate eco-cabins, nature, coastal landscapes and slower travel, Petit Métis offers an appealing alternative to a conventional hotel stay.
It also fits naturally into a larger Gaspésie road trip, whether you’re continuing farther around the peninsula or simply looking for a peaceful stop along the St. Lawrence.
Who Will Love Petit Métis?
We think Petit Métis is particularly well suited to couples, road-trippers and travellers looking for a quiet nature-focused getaway.
It’s also worth considering if you:
love unique, thoughtfully designed accommodations;
prefer nature to large resorts;
are planning a road trip through the Gaspésie;
appreciate having coffee and gathering spaces directly on site;
want easy access to the St. Lawrence and coastal scenery;
or are travelling with a dog and looking for a pet-friendly stay.
Our Favourite Part
If we had to choose one thing, it wouldn’t necessarily be a particular room or amenity.
It would be the setting.
There’s something incredibly calming about having the forest behind you and the St. Lawrence stretching out nearby. Even on a cloudy coastal morning, the landscape has its own character.
Petit Métis encourages you to experience that rather than distract you from it.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what you want from a getaway.
