Nairobi has a way of surprising you and my recent stay at the Novotel Nairobi Westlands was proof of that. Tucked into the lively pulse of Westlands, one of the city's most dynamic business and lifestyle districts, this is a hotel that feels unmistakably modern, unmistakably Kenyan and thoroughly comfortable all at once. I was invited for a media collaboration, and I left with a genuine appreciation for how the Novotel brand has reimagined what a contemporary stay in Nairobi can look like.

Before the bush, before the dust and the dawn game drives, there's a hotel in Westlands that eases you into the country properly. Mövenpick Hotel & Residences Nairobi is the continent's warmth translated into five-star comfort, terracotta tones, woven textures, and rooms that feel more like a home than a hotel.

Then there's the pool: genuinely one of the largest in Nairobi, and the easiest place to shake off a long-haul flight. Breakfast at Baluba is a buffet worth setting an alarm for, and every afternoon brings Chocolate Hour, sixty minutes entirely dedicated to cocoa indulgence (yes, really). 

And when the sun goes down, there's The View - the hotel's 360° revolving restaurant, quietly turning the whole Nairobi skyline past your table course by course. Best sunset seat in the city, no doubt about it.

The location does the rest of the work: just minutes from Nairobi National Park, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and the famed Giraffe Centre, so the wild starts before your real safari even does.

There are weekends away that leave you feeling as though you have simply changed your location. Then there are the rare ones that actually change your pace.

Cypress Valley by Artistree, in the Texas Hill Country less than an hour from Austin, belongs to the second category.

The drive from Austin is short enough to make this an easy escape, but once you arrive at Cypress Valley, the city feels wonderfully far away. Here, the accommodation is not a room inside a conventional hotel. It is a treehouse, surrounded by old-growth cypress trees, with a spring-fed creek running through the ravine below.

We stayed in Yoki, one of the property's signature treehouses, and it was exactly the kind of place where you quickly stop wondering what there is to do and start appreciating that there is nowhere you need to be.

There is no Wi-Fi in the treehouses.

There is no television.

Phone service is minimal.

And that is not an inconvenience to overcome. It is part of the design.

There are waterfront hotels where the view is the main attraction. At The Current Hotel, Autograph Collection, the view is only part of the story.

On Rocky Point, overlooking Tampa Bay, the hotel brings together contemporary design, an unusually serious art program, two distinct restaurants, and a setting that makes it very easy to lose track of time. The water is visible from the rooms, the restaurants, the pool, the fitness center, and the outdoor spaces. Even the public areas feel designed to draw your eye toward the changing landscape outside.

Part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, The Current is also a hotel with a point of view. Its interiors were designed by L2 Studios, drawing inspiration from Tampa Bay's evolving landscape and emerging fine arts scene. The owners' private collection appears throughout the property alongside rotating exhibitions by local artists.

The result is a hotel that feels less like a collection of rooms and more like a contemporary gallery with somewhere very comfortable to sleep.

If you're looking for somewhere to stay in Kuala Lumpur that combines incredible views with the comfort of home, this might just be it.

Some Italian hotels are about sightseeing. Borgobrufa Spa Resort is about staying put.

Set in the hills above Torgiano, in the Umbrian countryside between Perugia and Assisi, the resort occupies a 40,000-square-meter estate surrounded by vineyards, rolling green hills, and long views across the landscape. It is an adults-only property, and everything about it is designed around slowing down.

There is no need to fill every hour here.

You can spend the morning in the spa, have lunch overlooking the hills, swim in a heated pool, disappear into a private suite, and watch the Umbrian light change across the vineyards in the afternoon. The pleasure comes from having nowhere else you need to be.

There are hotels where you arrive, check in, and immediately start thinking about what to do next.

Relais Villa Corallo is different.

Drive through the security gates and follow the long, flower-lined approach, and the outside world begins to feel surprisingly far away. The villa appears at the end of the drive, surrounded by gardens, farmland, fountains, and the quiet landscape of Sant’Omero in Abruzzo. It is the kind of arrival that sets the tone before anyone has even opened the car door.

And in July 2026, Villa Corallo added an important new chapter to its story: it officially joined Relais & Châteaux, becoming the first property in Abruzzo to enter the association.

The recognition feels fitting.
