Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp: in the Heart of Belgium's Most Elegant City

Hidden behind the historic walls of a former monastery, Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp is widely regarded as the best hotel in Antwerp and one of Europe's most captivating luxury city retreats.

As Belgium's first member of The Leading Hotels of the World and a recipient of prestigious Michelin Keys, the hotel beautifully combines centuries of history with contemporary elegance, exceptional wellness, and an extraordinary culinary offering. Every corner tells a story, yet every comfort feels unmistakably modern.

During my stay, it quickly became clear that Botanic Sanctuary is a destination in its own right, offering an atmosphere of tranquility just moments from the vibrant heart of Antwerp.

Location & First Impressions

Stepping through the historic entrance feels like leaving the bustle of the city behind. Quiet cloisters, beautifully landscaped courtyards, and meticulously restored heritage buildings create an immediate sense of calm. Despite its peaceful setting, the hotel is perfectly positioned to discover everything Antwerp has to offer.

One of the hotel's most unique advantages is its immediate proximity to the Botanic Garden, located right next door. This historic green oasis offers a peaceful escape filled with medicinal plants, quiet pathways, and beautifully maintained greenery, perfectly complementing the serene atmosphere of the hotel itself.

The city itself deserves to be explored at a leisurely pace. Wander through the charming streets surrounding the Grote Markt, admire the magnificent Cathedral of Our Lady, browse the designer boutiques for which Antwerp is internationally renowned, and indulge in authentic Belgian chocolates from the city's celebrated chocolatiers.

One of my favorite discoveries was the spectacular Stadsfeestzaal. With its breathtaking golden walls, soaring glass roof, and lavish architectural details, this historic shopping arcade is one of the city's most impressive landmarks and well worth a visit.

Accommodation

I stayed in a beautiful suite in the Elisabeth Wing, which perfectly reflected the understated elegance that defines the entire property.

The first thing that stood out was the exceptional Hästens bed. Known worldwide for its handcrafted quality and unparalleled comfort, it provided one of the best night's sleeps I had in a while.

The suite itself was spacious, filled with natural light, and overlooked the historic surroundings through large windows that offered lovely views across the property. The luxurious bathroom featured a generous freestanding bathtub, creating the perfect place to unwind after a day spent exploring Antwerp.

Every detail, from the refined materials to the calming color palette, contributed to an atmosphere that felt both luxurious and wonderfully relaxing.

Wellness & Facilities

The Botanic Health Spa is undoubtedly one of the hotel's greatest assets. Spanning approximately 1,000 square meters across three levels, it offers an impressive sanctuary dedicated entirely to relaxation and wellbeing.

At its heart is a stunning 18-metre panoramic indoor swimming pool, where natural light and elegant design create a wonderfully calming atmosphere.

The thermal facilities include an infrared sauna and a soothing Himalaya sauna, each offering a distinct wellness experience. Guests can also enjoy beautifully designed steam rooms, refresh under the experience showers, or stimulate circulation at the ice fountain before retreating to the peaceful relaxation gallery, where the loungers invite complete tranquility.

For those looking to stay active, the hotel features a 24-hour Technogym-equipped Health Club, alongside a wide range of treatments available in dedicated spa suites, including options for couples.

Gastronomy

Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp has firmly established itself as one of Belgium's most exciting culinary destinations, with several high-quality restaurants located directly on the property.

The absolute highlight of my stay was the Afternoon Tea by Roger van Damme. Beautifully presented and served in an elegant setting, this refined experience combines delicate savory creations with freshly baked scones, exquisite pastries, and beautifully crafted desserts. Every course demonstrates the precision, creativity, and artistry for which Roger van Damme is renowned.

In addition to this signature experience, the hotel offers an impressive selection of restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Hertog Jan and Fine Fleur, both delivering refined fine dining experiences at the highest level. For a more relaxed yet equally stylish setting, guests can enjoy Henry's Bar & Bistro or Bar Bulot, each offering a sophisticated atmosphere with a focus on quality ingredients and classic flavors.

Together, these venues create a diverse and well-balanced culinary offering, making Botanic Sanctuary a true destination for food lovers without needing to leave the property.

Final Thoughts

Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp is the best hotel in Antwerp, a beautifully restored historic sanctuary where exceptional hospitality, remarkable gastronomy, and outstanding wellness come together to create one of Belgium's finest luxury experiences.

For me, the stay was defined by the remarkable comfort of the Hästens bed, the elegant Elisabeth Wing Suite, the serene atmosphere of the spa, and the unforgettable Afternoon Tea by Roger van Damme. Combined with the beauty of Antwerp itself, from its world-famous chocolates to the magnificent golden interior of the Stadsfeestzaal, every moment felt thoughtfully curated and genuinely memorable.

Whether visiting for a romantic getaway, a wellness escape, or a luxurious city break, Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp offers an experience that lingers long after check-out, setting a benchmark for luxury hospitality in Belgium.
