Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik: Where Dubrovnik's History Comes to Life

Opened in 1897 as the city's very first modern hotel, it has welcomed royalty, diplomats and travellers for more than 125 years while witnessing Dubrovnik's remarkable transformation into one of Europe's most iconic destinations.
Today, the beautifully restored landmark combines historic elegance with contemporary comfort, making it one of the most memorable places to stay in the city.
A Hotel That Helped Shape Dubrovnik
Long before Dubrovnik became Croatia's tourism icon, Austrian entrepreneur Baron Viktor Kalchberg recognised its enormous potential. As president of Austrian Lloyd, he noticed that passengers arriving by steamship rarely stayed overnight because the city lacked high-quality accommodation.
His vision changed Dubrovnik forever.
Construction of the Imperial Hotel began in 1895, and when the hotel officially opened on 29 May 1897, fireworks illuminated the city as Dubrovnik celebrated the arrival of its first grand hotel. At the time, the Imperial introduced remarkable innovations including electric lighting, central heating, elevators and hot and cold running water, setting an entirely new standard of hospitality.
Throughout its history, the hotel welcomed distinguished guests from around the world, including King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, before being carefully restored and reopening as Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik in 2005.
The Best Location in Dubrovnik
One of the things I loved most about Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik was its incredible location.
Situated only a few steps from Pile Gate, the main entrance to Dubrovnik's UNESCO-listed Old Town, it couldn't be easier to explore the city on foot. While many hotels require a taxi ride or a long uphill walk, everything here is literally just around the corner.
After wandering through Dubrovnik's medieval streets, I could easily return to the hotel for a short break before heading back out for sunset or dinner.
For me, this central location made a huge difference throughout the stay.
Views Across Dubrovnik
The rooms at Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik combine classic proportions with contemporary furnishings.
Hilton currently offers guest rooms, suites and executive accommodation, with views that can look towards the sea, Old Town rooftops or the surrounding historic landscape depending on the category.
The design is relatively restrained, allowing the views and architecture to do much of the talking.
For me, the rooms with views are the ones to request if available. Dubrovnik is a destination where looking out of the window can be almost as enjoyable as exploring the city itself.
The sight of the terracotta rooftops against the Adriatic is instantly recognisable, and the hotel gives you the chance to wake up to it.
Another highlight was waking up to beautiful views overlooking Dubrovnik's historic rooftops and ancient city walls.
From several areas of the hotel, you can admire the unmistakable skyline of the Old Town while enjoying a much quieter atmosphere than inside the city itself. It creates a wonderful contrast between being close to all the attractions while still having a peaceful retreat to return to.
One of My Favourite Perks: The Executive Lounge
One of my personal highlights was definitely the Executive Lounge.
Throughout the afternoon, complimentary coffee, soft drinks and a selection of sweet and savoury snacks were available. Later in the evening, the lounge served delicious canapés together with wine, beer, spirits and other beverages.
After spending the day exploring Dubrovnik, it became my favourite place to relax before dinner while enjoying the elegant atmosphere of the hotel.
It's one of those small details that makes a stay feel even more special.
Dining at Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik
Another memorable part of my stay was dinner at the hotel's restaurant.
The elegant setting perfectly reflects the hotel's historic character while offering refined Mediterranean cuisine with a contemporary touch. Combined with attentive service and a relaxed atmosphere, it provided the perfect ending after a day spent discovering Dubrovnik.
Breakfast was equally impressive, offering an extensive buffet with fresh pastries, fruit, local specialties, eggs prepared to order and everything needed for a relaxed start to the day.
More Than a Luxury Hotel
What impressed me most about Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik is that it never feels like just another luxury hotel.
Every corridor, staircase and historic detail reflects more than a century of Dubrovnik's history. Despite its long heritage, the hotel feels fresh, elegant and perfectly suited for modern travellers.
