Luxury Spa Resort Lürzerhof: An Alpine Retreat Where the Spa Takes Centre Stage
There are Alpine hotels where the mountains are the main event, and then there are places where the mountains become part of a much bigger experience. Lürzerhof belongs to the second group.
Set in Untertauern in Salzburger Land, close to Obertauern, this family-run retreat has been shaped by the Habersatter family for more than 400 years. What began as a farm eventually became a restaurant in the 1950s and, over time, evolved into the Nature SPA Resort Lürzerhof of today.
The setting is unmistakably Austrian Alps, but the experience is not limited to hiking boots and ski days. The real draw is the 4,500-square-metre Nature & Sky SPA, the all-inclusive approach, regional food and a collection of rooms and suites designed around the landscape.
And after the major 2026 expansion, the hotel has another reason to visit: a new adults-only Sky Spa on the fifth floor, crowned by a spectacular infinity pool facing the Radstädter Tauern.
The Location
Lürzerhof sits at Dorfstraße 23 in Untertauern, in Salzburger Land, with Obertauern close by. The hotel describes itself as having direct access to the Obertauern area, making it suitable for both winter skiing and summer mountain adventures.
In summer, the surrounding landscape lends itself to hiking, cycling and long walks through the wooded hills. In winter, snow takes over and Obertauern becomes the obvious playground.
There is also something particularly appealing about having a proper Alpine landscape outside the door without being in the middle of a busy resort centre.
First Impressions
Lürzerhof feels rooted in its surroundings rather than designed to distract you from them.
Natural materials, warm timber and Alpine-inspired interiors give the public spaces a comfortable, lived-in quality. The atmosphere is polished but still recognisably mountain-oriented.
The family history helps, too. This is not a hotel that appeared overnight. The Habersatter family has been connected with the property for generations, and that continuity comes through in the emphasis on hospitality, regional food and the surrounding landscape.
Then you see the spa.
That is when the character of the hotel becomes clear.
Rooms and Suites
The accommodation ranges from comfortable Alpine rooms to large suites, with balconies and terraces designed to make the most of the mountain views.
Warm woods, soft fabrics and muted colours keep the rooms feeling calm rather than overly decorative. The rooms also come with practical touches for an active mountain holiday, including backpacks, umbrellas and wellness bags with bathrobes and towels.
The 2026 expansion introduced a new collection of rooms and suites on the fourth floor. Some are particularly impressive, with floor-to-ceiling windows, freestanding bathtubs, private saunas, outdoor whirlpools and large terraces facing the Radstädter Tauern. There are also suites with private cinemas and dedicated fitness areas.
The new Sky N°45 Deluxe Pool Suite, for example, stretches across 137 square metres, while the new Sky N°48 Home Suite offers 102 square metres.
For couples, these new suites make a strong argument for simply staying in for the afternoon.
The Nature & Sky SPA
This is where Lürzerhof really separates itself from a conventional Alpine hotel.
The spa covers around 4,500 square metres and includes seven pools, seven saunas and steam baths, plus nine relaxation areas. There is an indoor panorama pool, a heated four-season outdoor pool, infinity pools and a natural swimming pond.
There is also an adults-only sauna world with a Finnish panorama sauna, bio sauna, aroma steam bath, infrared facilities and the natural sauna lake for cooling off.
But the newest addition is the most memorable.
The Sky Spa
Opened as part of the 2026 transformation, the fifth-floor Sky Spa is dedicated to adults and revolves around a 20-metre cantilevered infinity pool.
The pool projects beyond the building with uninterrupted views towards the Radstädter Tauern, creating the rather surreal sensation of swimming above the valley. The space also includes a Finnish panorama sauna, bio panorama sauna, infrared salt room, aroma steam bath, two panoramic relaxation rooms and a tea lounge.
This is the kind of spa where you may initially plan to spend an hour and then discover that half the day has disappeared.
The Natural Swimming Lake
Not everything here is about heated water.
Lürzerhof also has a natural swimming lake, complete with a sauna lake for cooling down after a session in the sauna world. It gives the wellness experience a more elemental side, particularly in summer when the surrounding mountains and greenery are reflected in the water.
The contrast between the high-tech Sky Pool and the natural swimming pond is one of the hotel's cleverest touches. You can choose exactly how close to nature you want to get.
Dining at Lürzerhof
The culinary programme follows the same all-inclusive philosophy as the spa.
Breakfast runs from morning into late morning, while the gourmet board continues throughout the day with regional ingredients and contemporary cooking. The hotel works with producers from the Tauern region for meat, vegetables, dairy products, bread and other ingredients.
There are several dining spaces, including the Aromagarden, Buffet(t)raum and Augenweide restaurant.
Dinner moves towards a more refined six-course experience, while seasonal occasions add another dimension to the food programme. Guests can, for example, head to the hotel's own Gnadenalm for an Alpine breakfast or a fondue evening.
And because the food is included as part of the Premium Inclusive concept, there is less of that feeling that every meal needs to be planned around an extra charge.
Alpine Experiences
It would be difficult to come to Lürzerhof and ignore the mountains.
The hotel offers a weekly activity programme as well as hiking, biking and skiing experiences. Mountain bikes are available free of charge, while e-bikes can be rented for an additional fee. Hiking poles, backpacks and other useful equipment are also available.
Winter brings the obvious pleasures of skiing around Obertauern. Summer is slower and arguably more suited to the personality of the hotel: long walks, mountain air, cycling and afternoons spent coming back to the spa with tired legs.
The hotel's own Gnadenalm adds another option. The high Alpine pasture, around four kilometres from Lürzerhof, is used for seasonal experiences and gives guests a chance to experience the mountain setting away from the hotel itself.
A Hotel With Its Own Rhythm
One of the nicest things about Lürzerhof is that you do not have to decide what kind of holiday you are having.
A morning can begin with yoga or a swim, followed by breakfast and a hike. The afternoon can disappear into the adults-only spa. Dinner might be followed by a drink at the Adlerhorst Bar rather than another excursion.
For families, there are dedicated areas and children's facilities, including a kids' club and family spa spaces. Adults can retreat to the adults-only areas when they want something quieter.
That separation is useful. Everyone gets a version of the holiday they came for.
What Sets Lürzerhof Apart?
It is the sheer amount of experience packed into one property.
The hotel has the history of a family-run Alpine establishment, the scale of a destination resort and a spa that would be reason enough to travel here.
Then there is the 2026 expansion. The new Sky Spa has shifted the focus even further towards wellness, while the new suites bring more privacy and contemporary Alpine design to the accommodation.
Most importantly, the property does not ask you to choose between wellness and the outdoors.
You can have both.
ürzerhof is the sort of place where the word spa starts to mean something broader.
Yes, there are treatments, saunas, pools and quiet rooms. But there is also the mountain outside, the natural swimming lake, the food, the family history and the pleasure of spending an entire afternoon doing very little.
The new Sky Spa takes that idea even further. Floating above the landscape in the infinity pool, with the Radstädter Tauern stretching out in front of you, it becomes difficult to remember why you were checking your phone in the first place.
For a stay that combines Austrian mountain life with one of the region's most ambitious wellness experiences, Lürzerhof has become a destination in its own right.
